In the Gulf of Mexico, the ocean was seen literally on fire. In climatic footage spreading over the internet and media outlets, bright orange flames are seen in the ocean about 150 yards from a Pemex oil drilling platform west of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula around dawn on June 2.
The fire is believed to have been caused by a gas leak in an underwater pipeline in the Gulf. This marks another mishap for the Mexican state-owned oil company Petroleos Mexicanos, which has been shaken by numerous major oil accidents in recent years.

Due to the circular shape of the blaze, it was dubbed an ‘eye of fire’ on social media. Several boats were dispatched after the breakout to suffocate the flames and put it under control.
