On Republic Day, a colourful tableau of Meghalaya reflecting the state’s 50-year history and paying honour to its women-led cooperative societies and self-help groups will be unveiled on the refurbished Rajpath, in keeping with the spirit of the state’s golden jubilee festivities.
Republic Parade for 2022
This year’s parade will feature a total of 21 tableaux, including 12 from various states and Union Territories and nine from various ministries. Meghalaya’s unique subject on women cooperatives, as well as the state’s golden jubilee year, aided in obtaining clearance from high-level experts to display the tableau this year.
Meghalaya’s astonishing tableau
The tableau will also feature bamboo and cane handicrafts, as well as Lakadong turmeric, which is famous in the hill state. According to a representative for the Ministry of Defense, which organises the yearly mega event, the popularity of these items is a testament to the tireless work of women-led cooperative societies and their contribution to the state economy.

Cane and bamboo products, such as furniture, have proven to be a viable alternative to non-biodegradable plastic and rare wood. Such things are not only meeting local demand, but are also being sold in large quantities overseas, benefiting both women craftsmen and the government, according to the spokesman during the parade’s full-dress rehearsal.

The world’s finest turmeric type, Lakadong turmeric from the Jaintia Hills, is prized for its high curcumin concentration.
Representing local women artisans
Tribal women artisans, as well as their bamboo and cane items, are shown in this colourful scene. When the tableau passes by the platform reserved for the President, Prime Minister, and other dignitaries, many of whom are from outside, the traditional Wangala drummers of Meghalaya will stroll down the side of the tableau.
The fact that the entire tableau is fashioned of bamboo and cane is likely to draw everyone’s attention. A basket full of Lakadong turmeric will be hung on the side of the float as a draw.
