According to top police officials, jihadis have begun to use tourist and medical visas to cross the international border from Bangladesh to India via Assam and the Northeast.
Moreover, high-ranking officials in the Assam police force said that recent examinations of imprisoned Mujahideens and Jihadis have revealed that terrorists headquartered in Bangladesh pass the international border on tourist and medical visas.
According to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, some elements and fundamentalists are active in the state.
More dangerous than armed Jihadis
They were invited as guest lecturers for certain Islamic religious ceremonies in Barpeta, according to one case.
Their goal was to indoctrinate people with terrorism. They are more dangerous than armed jihadis, according to the sources.
“It is very easy to get a tourist or medical visa. So they use it to enter the state for their activities. They are not armed terrorists but their aim is to spread Jihad. We have taken action for quite some instances that have come to light,” the sources said.
In addition, sources said, “In 2014, in 2020, 2021 we have come across such cases when they used tourist or medical visa to enter into the state and they try to spread jihad after coming into the state. One such prime case is Jalaluddin Osmani who came here to Barpeta to participate as a guest speaker at an Islamic function. When questioned about the situation, Assam DGP Bhaskar Mahanta replied that it is true that Jihadists cross the border producing medical and tourist visas. He remarked, “Assam police is now keeping a close eye on that.”
