Jignesh Mevani, a Gujarat MLA, was re-arrested in a case in western Assam’s Barpeta district on Monday afternoon, only minutes after a court in Kokrajhar granted him bail.
Following an FIR submitted by a BJP leader in Kokrajhar seeking action against the MLA’s alleged inflammatory tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mevani was detained on Thursday in Gujarat’s Palanpur by a squad of Assam police.
On Sunday, the Kokrajhar court reserved its decision on his bail plea, and he was remanded in judicial prison for one day.
However, Jignesh Mevani was granted bail in connection with the case filed at the Kokrajhar police station on Monday morning.
Jignesh Mevani rearrested for assaulting
Soon after, a police unit from Barpeta arrived and arrested him in connection with another case. Mevani was re-arrested after a lady police officer filed a complaint alleging that the Gujarat MLA harassed her and prevented her from performing her duties.
Jignesh Mevani allegedly threatened her while being transported from Guwahati airport to Kokrajhar on Thursday, according to the female police officer.
Meanwhile, while being transported to Kokrajhar court, Mevani said that the BJP and RSS were using “vendetta politics” to smear his reputation.
In addition, he said, “They’ve been doing it in a systematic manner. They did it to Rohit Vemula, Chandrasekhar Azad, and now they’re going after me “In Kokrajhar, Mevani told reporters.
In his FIR on April 18, BJP leader Arup Kumar Dey said that Mevani’s tweets are “likely to instigate a section of the masses belonging to a certain community.”
The Congress, on the other hand, claimed that Mevani was detained in Assam by the BJP-led government because of his growing influence in Gujarat ahead of the Assembly elections.
