The Indian Railways has decided to cancel 16 mail and express passenger trains due to the increase in electricity demand. The trains has been cancelled till the 24th of May as they will have to carry coal to power plants amidst shortage.

The Indian railways took this decision to cancel over 500 trips has been taken due to the shortage of coal and overuse of electricity. The average daily coal rakes has been increased to 400 in recent date which crosses the mark of the last 5 years.
According to reports, the indian railways are committed to provide more than 400 coal rakes on a daily basis which will carry about 3,500 tonnes of coal so as to meet the energy requirements. The drill will continue to work until the coal stocks at the power plants improve. This decision has been made to avoid any chaos in the summer months.
The railway minister stated, “these are protests against cancellation of passenger trains in different states, but we have no option left with us as the immediate need to ensure that there is no coal shortage at power plants and there is no blackout. Its a catch 22 situation for us. we hope to get over this temporary phase.”
