According to an RTI response, the Indian Railways have garnered additional revenue of nearly Rs 1,500 crore from senior citizen travelers since March 2020, when the assistance was discontinued following the commencement of the Covid-19 outbreak.

The Indian Railways responded in response to a Right to Information request from Chandra Shekhar Gaur of Madhya Pradesh that between March 20, 2020, and March 31, 2022, they did not grant incentives to 7.31 crore senior citizen passengers.

However, there were 4.46 crore men over 60, 2.84 crore women over 58, and 8,310 transsexual people among them.

According to the RTI response, the total revenue from senior citizen travelers during the time was Rs 3,464 crore, with an extra Rs 1,500 crore generated due to the suspension of the concession.

Indian Railway divides the revenue into 3 genders

The whole revenue from elderly citizens was divided into three genders, according to the RTI response: Rs 2,082 crore from male passengers, Rs 1,381 crore from female passengers, and Rs 45.58 lakh from transgenders.

In all classes of Indian Railway, female senior citizens are entitled to a 50% discount, while male and transgender senior citizens are eligible for a 40% discount.

However, a woman must be 58 years old to qualify for the discount, while a guy must be 60 years old. The concessions, which were put on hold in March 2020 when the country was ravaged by the coronavirus pandemic, have remained on hold to this day, with senior officials hinting they may not be renewed.

While train services were suspended for most of 2020 and parts of 2021, pressure for concessions began to emerge as services returned to normal.

Moreover, the railway concessions have been a hot topic over the previous two decades, with several committees proposing their removal.

As a result, the Railways made the concession for the elderly optional in July 2016. The Indian Railway bears a large financial burden of roughly Rs 2,000 crore every year as a result of the 53 different sorts of concessions it provides to different types of passengers.

The senior citizen discount accounts for almost 80% of the overall discounts offered by the national carrier. The Railway has previously attempted but failed, to persuade individuals to give up their senior citizen benefits.

In fact, according to a 2019 study by the Comptroller and Auditor General, senior citizen passengers’ response to the “give it up” scheme was not very positive.

According to the study, out of 4.41 crore senior citizen passengers, 7.53 lakh (1.7%) chose to forego 50% concession and 10.9 lakh (2.47%) chose to forego 100% concession.
