On a trial basis in Assam’s Tinsukia area, Indian Oil Corp (IOC) brought out M15 petrol, a 15% methanol-to-petrol blend.

On Saturday, Rameswar Teli, Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, introduced the M15 gasoline in the presence of Niti Aayog member VK Saraswat and IOC chairman SM Vaidya.

Methanol to provide comfort from price rise
According to Teli, mixing gasoline with CH3OH will provide comfort from rising prices.
“The M15 pilot program is a first step toward achieving fuel independence and lowering import dependency,” he stated.
Steps are being taken by IOC to make India self-sufficient in energy, he added.
The pilot rollout was done in Tinsukia by the company due to the ready availability of methanol, which is being manufactured by Assam Petrochemical Ltd in the vicinity of Digboi refinery, said an official statement.
