IIT Guwahati to launch School of Health Sciences & Technology, 2022

A School of Health Sciences and Technology will be established at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati. 

According to a release from IIT Guwahati, the new school will offer MTech and Ph.D. programs in Health Sciences and Technology, with the goal of boosting cutting-edge research in medicines, diagnostics, stem cells, public health, and health data analytics.

The ‘Jyoti and Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology’ will be established at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati in conjunction with the Mehta Family Foundation (MFF) of Houston, Texas, USA.

Moreover, during the current academic year, this new school at IIT Guwahati will begin academic activities.

“I applaud IIT Guwahati and the Mehta Family Foundation for this wonderful initiative,” stated Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser, Government of India, speaking at the event.

In addition, he said, “At this time, I am confident that the School of Health Sciences and Technology will house a variety of modern academic curricula, centers of excellence, incubators, and research laboratories to develop multidisciplinary research and education, which is desperately needed in the country.”

Meanwhile, from this academic year, the Jyoti and Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology will offer new master’s and Ph.D. programs in Health Sciences and Technology. GATE 2022 will admit the first batch of 20 MTech students in the Biomedical Science and Engineering track to IIT Guwahati.

“The institute profoundly thanks the Mehta Family Foundation for their generous support towards establishing this second new program on Health Sciences and Technology at IIT Guwahati, which will inculcate cutting-edge education and research in the areas related to therapeutics, diagnostics, prosthesis, implantation, bioinformatics, molecular biology, regen,” said Prof. T. G. Sitharam, Director, IIT Guwahati.

“Such translational education and research will have a far-reaching influence, as they will not only meet the nation’s demand for adequately trained postgraduates but will also catalyze research production that meets worldwide standards.”

“This multi-disciplinary research and education school will foster innovation in new areas at the frontier of the healthcare revolution to deliver sustainable solutions to improve the healthcare of the people in India,” said Rahul Mehta, Chief Executive Officer of the Mehta Family Foundation in the United States.

This new multidisciplinary Health Sciences and Technology curriculum at IIT Guwahati was created in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. 

The NEP argues for the creation of a comprehensive academic curriculum to develop the country’s top abilities via both pedagogic and practical training.

The new program will place an emphasis on expanding training in both theoretical and practical aspects, allowing academic leaders to establish a strong scientific basis while also being able to transform ideas into biomedical innovations.

The newly established school aims to educate students in topics related to health science and technology, with a focus on courses from other science and engineering disciplines such as biosciences and bioengineering, electronics and electrical engineering, chemical engineering, mathematics and statistics, and design, among others, according to IIT Guwahati.
