On Monday, police detained over 115 persons who were attempting to conduct a demonstration in front of the DGP’s office in Ulubari, Guwahati, demanding the prompt release of the results of the recently held constable recruitment examination.

Moreover, out of the 115 persons detained, 36 people have been arrested.

Meanwhile, in Paltan Bazar police station, Guwhati, a case has been filed against them (case no 202/2022, U/s 120 (B)/141/142/143/145/189/332/353 IPC R/W Sec 3 of the PDPP Act).

They were brought before the court and remanded in police detention for four days.

The protestors were purportedly outraged by the publication of a new advertisement for police recruiting.

Later, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta told the media that the recruitment exam results are still being processed. He emphasised that an advertisement for new recruiting has been published, but that it is for many extra positions that have been created in the interim.

Mahanta went on to say that the Assam Police Department did not want officers involved in “unnecessary, illegal” agitation and sloganeering. Such individuals will destabilise the Assam Police, he warned, adding that the force needs disciplined officers.

Partha Sarathi Mahanta the Joint Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, told media persons, “The recruitment process must be transparent. However, the recruitment exam took place in February. Why is there so much pressure to announce the results in such a short period of time?

Further, the police have started an investigation to figure out what’s going on.

In addition, he said, “We discovered evidence against 36 people, and as a result, they’ve been arrested.”
