Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on November 25, announced that the most awaited Guwahati Municipality elections are likely to be held on February 22, 2022, after three years of delay. The announcement was made by the CM while attending a meeting in Bongaigaon.
Wards
The to be held election will be conducted in 64 wards instead of 31 wards unlike in 2013. Before 2013, there were 60 wards in Guwahati after which the wards were combined and the total number changed to 31 wards.
About the delay in conducting of Municipality election
It was due to several reasons like the Lok Sabha elections, CAA protests and COVID-19 pandemic that the elections were postponed several times in the state for the past three years.
However, due to the delay in elections the councilors were furious over the Assam government for neglecting the elections for long.
