Assam: Darrang woman found dead after 8 months of marriage in mysterious condition

A 25-year-old woman was discovered dead in Rajapukhuri village, Panbari outpost, Darrang district, Assam, in a mystery occurrence. Her husband’s relatives allegedly murdered her for dowry in Sarulah village of Sualkuchi, around 35 kilometres north of Guwahati.

Yesmina Khatun, who was discovered hanging from a fan at her home, has been identified as the victim. Eight months ago, she married Sofikul Islam.

The incident was discovered after her husband, Kartik Das, reported his wife hanging from the ceiling of her chamber to the police on Monday evening. The police arrived later and took the deceased away for a post-mortem examination.

Following Yesmina’s death, her family members are said to have filed a FIR against her husband and in-laws.

Police detained Kartik Das, his sister Dipumoni Das, and his brother-in-law Utpal Das after receiving a FIR from the deceased’s relatives.

“Kartik and his family members allegedly murdered her over dowry concerns,” Sualkuchi police station officer in-charge Deba Kumar Saud stated.

Panbari police detained the accused, Sofikul Islam (27) Islam is also accused of harassing his wife for dowry.

According to reports, the victim’s mother said that her daughter’s husband and in-laws had demanded Rs 3 lakh in dowry from them, and that they had arranged her murder to seem like it.

Following Yesmina’s death, her family members are said to have filed a FIR against her husband and in-laws.

According to reports, the victim’s mother said that her daughter’s husband and in-laws had demanded Rs 3 lakh in dowry from them, and that they had arranged her murder to seem like it.

The accused has been placed in judicial custody under sections 304B (dowry death) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
