COVID: Mizoram still free from Omicron as 2 returnees from foreign countries test negative for Omicron

The northeast region of the country was under a certain panic as soon as the state of Manipur became the first state in the region to report the new Omicron variant of the Coronavirus. However, to everyone’s relief, they have been no further cases of Omicron in the other parts of the region so far.

According to the latest update, the state of Mizoram is still free from the new Omicron variant and this was confirmed by the State nodal officer of Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and official spokesperson on COVID-19 Dr. Pachuau Lalmalsawma.

National Institute of Biomedical Genomics in West Bengal’s report

According to a national news agency, Dr. Lalmalsawma asserted that the two individuals who have come from Australia and Singapore recently have tested negative for the new Omicron variant of the Coronavirus, although both the individuals tested COVID positive on their arrival at Lengpui airport in Aizwal.

Both of their test samples were sent for genome sequencing to the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics in West Bengal’s Kalyani on December 22. The results came out negative on Monday.

Mizoram’s latest COVID count

Meanwhile, stressing the fact that the new variants of Coronavirus like delta and others are still prevalent in the state, Dr. Lalmalsawma urged everyone in the state to adhere to the strict COVID-19 Appropriate Behaviour (CAB).

Mizoram on Tuesday reported 184 new COVID-19 cases, taking the state’s tally to 1,40,748, according to the health department. The death toll remains at 539 as no new fatality was reported in the last 24 hours.
