Police arrested a 38-year-old Thiruvottiyur woman after she allegedly set fire to her 10-year-old daughter on Sunday night after her husband dared her to do so to prove her fidelity. The child, who had suffered 75% burns, died on Monday morning, and Jayalakshmi and her husband Padmanabhan were apprehended by police. They were later imprisoned by a court of law.

Concerning the 10-year-old daughter and her family

Pavithra, a Class V student at a government school, was living with her mother and stepfather Padmanabhan. According to police, Jayalakshmi married Palvannan when she was 19 years old. She had a daughter, who is now a nursing student and lives with her grandmother in Tuticorin.

Jayalakshmi’s marriage story

According to an officer, woman left Palvannan a few years later and married his younger brother Durairaj. The couple traveled to Mumbai, where she gave birth to Pavitra. Jayalakshmi then left Durairaj and returned to Chennai, where she settled in Thiruvottiyur and became friends with Padmanabhan, a divorced tanker driver. They married nine years ago and now have two children, ages six and four.

How did the incident occur?

According to the officer, Padmanabhan frequently got drunk and fought with her, suspecting her fidelity. On Sunday night, he started a new fight and challenged her to burn her daughter, claiming that the fire would not harm the child if she was innocent. Jayalakshmi dragged Pavithra out of the room where she was sleeping with her stepsisters. She poured kerosene on the child’s body and set it on fire.
