187th Celebration of Assam Rifles held in Longding, Arunachal Pradesh

On 24th of March 2022, the Assam Riffles Battalion celebrated its 187th Raising day as a mark of an oldest standing paramilitary forces of the country.

History of Assam Riffles

The Assam Riffles started its journey as a paramilitary force long before India’s independence on 24th of March 1835. Over the years , this force was able to demonstrate its capability in all its arena as well as in the challenging environment. It did so by displaying high degree of alarcity, discipline and proficiency. Overall the Assam Riffles were able to contribute immensely be it in the field of guarding the international borders in the northeastern part of our country. It has been able to make peace and amends with our brother nation and has maintained its status quo throughout.

On the day of the ceremony one of the ex servicemen and a Veer Nari of the Assam Riffles had solemnly graced the occassion. At the event, a number of services were performed including wreath laying for all the war heroes who had to sacrifice their lives for the nation.

In addition, all the Veer Nari’s were also falicitated and honoured for their extra ordinary service in the line of duty. The whole event witnessed a hearing of a number of plans that were put forward by the government. Several new policies and agendas were marked towards the upliftment, growth and prosperity of the servicemen. At the same time, the event also addressed some of the grave concerns faced by the men and these problems could be tackled to prevent any mishaps in future. A documentary on the background of Assam Riffles was also portrayed that gave a glimpse on the history of the Battalion.

Towards the end of the event, all the Veer Nari’s and all the ex servicemen paid tribute to all those who lost their lives in the Line of Duty. As a whole, the event was huge success and was appreciated for organising a well planned event.

Why is it celebrated

Similar to the Rashtriya Riffles of Jammu and Kashmir, the Assam Riffles play an integral part in the northeastern state of india. These Paramilitary forces are specialized to operate in regions that has a lot of insurgency issues and conflicts. They operate mainly in the areas of the region that are occupied by insurgents and carries its process.

Thursday marked the history’s oldest force to celebrate its 187th anniversary. Many notable servicemen were a part of the celebration including General MM Naravane COAS and many top officials of the Indian Army.

The Assam Riffles is said to be oldest long standing branch of the Indian Army, since the period of British rule. Initially it was called Cachar Levy. Over the years, the Assam Riffles has served in all situations and gained its establisment as a Police Unit of Assam in 1835. The main purpose was to protect the lives of the people of the Northeastern Region.

On the day of 24th March, the event is mainly organised to celebrate and mark the glorious acheivements earned by the servicemen in their due course of time. This day acknowledges the services provided in the various occasions over the years including in the World War 1 and 2.

After India’s Independence several other forces came into the light, but the Assam Riffles were able to retain its position to be the skilled one in the region. Other than protecting the lives of people in the region, it also performed services which included giving aid and relief packs at the time of emergency, giving medical assistance, providing education to the untouched community and so on.
