ASSAM: The state government has announced a wide series of initiatives built exclusively for people with special abilities, on the occasion of International Day of Disabled Persons, observed on December 3.

Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his official Twitter handle to announce, “Attended a program on this special day at Bhaskar Verma Kshetra, Amingaon today. As our gratitude to specially-abled people, we’ve decided to upgrade Deaf & Dumb School, Kahilipara & Blind School, Basistha to Higher Secondary level.”
He added, “Also, Assamese Sign Language will be developed in line with Indian Sign Language. Four percent reservation will be given to specially-abled people in jobs as well as for admission in medical colleges & other colleges. GoA is also considering holding special recruitment drive for them.”
Furthermore, he also informed that a separate directorate, namely, ‘Directorate of Social Justice and Empowerment’ would be effectively created with the motive to expedite socio-economic and academic empowerment of the specially-abled people.
He has also noted, that by December, next year, the GoA will provide wheelchairs and tri-rickshaws to every person with mobility challenges.
