APCC demands BJP candidate Phanidhar Talukdar to Disqualify for indulging in bribery

On Friday, a day prior to the state bye-elections, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) demanded in a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Assam,

to disqualify Phanidhar Talukdar, a BJP candidate for allegedly distributing money to the voters.

APCC’s complaints against Phanidhar Talukdar

Referring to a viral video, the APCC complaint said that Talukdar who has recently left All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and later joined BJP has been indulging in corrupt practices.

“It has come to the notice of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee through media reports and video clippings that the BJP candidate of Bhawanipur Constituency, Sri Phani Talukdar is indulging in bribery and corrupt practices by distributing money to voters outside his residence in Bhawanipur” the letter stated.

“This brazen act by the candidate is a gross violation of the provisions of Section 123 (1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 as well as the Election Commission of India’s Model Code of Conduct,” further it was mentioned.

Paying local residents in front of Talukdar’s house

The APCC has reported that the local residents of Bhabanipur have been paid off Rs, 200 for each in front of the house of Talukdar and it was evident through a video clipping which was attached with the complaint letter.

In this regard general secretary of APCC, Boddeta said, “Under the circumstances, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee requests ECI to urgently take prompt and immediate action against Talukdar by disqualifying him from contesting the ensuing Bye-Elections.”
