Standing Firm Against Disruption: Cotton University Students Oppose ‘Khao Gully’

Khao Gully in Guwahati: The vibrant atmosphere of Cotton University, a hub of academic excellence in Guwahati, has been stirred by a recent decision by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). The GMC’s move to designate a stretch of Lakshminath Bezbaruah Road as ‘Khao Gully,’ a culinary hub, has sparked strong opposition from the university’s student body. The earmarked area, situated in close proximity to the university hostels and various academic departments, has raised concerns about its potential impact on the scholarly environment.

Students, as torchbearers of the institution’s ethos, have not hesitated to voice their discontent over this decision. With a belief that the establishment of ‘Khao Gully’ could potentially disrupt the academic sanctity that Cotton University upholds, the Cotton University Students’ Union has taken up the mantle of advocating for a reconsideration of the chosen location. Tridib Bhagabati, President of the union, expressed their collective concern, stating, “Last night we noticed that few people came in 30-40 vehicles and set up their business establishments on the road near our hostels where a few departments are located that connect it with the main building.”

The underlying sentiment of this opposition lies in the desire to preserve the university’s academic ambiance. The union has presented its grievances before both the chief minister and the GMC, urging a reevaluation of the selected area for ‘Khao Gully’. Bhagabati’s articulation of their concerns underscores the seriousness of the matter, emphasizing the potential disruption of the university’s educational ecosystem. His words reflect the sentiment of many: “This has the potential to compromise the educational environment we are committed to maintaining.”

The student community’s stance is clear: they prioritize the maintenance of an environment conducive to learning over any commercial endeavor. Bhagabati conveyed this perspective, stating that a choice must be made between commerce and education, with one taking precedence over the other. “There are so many universities in the state, and nowhere has the concept of Khao Gully been established,” he emphasized.

The students’ determination to protect their academic haven is evident in their proposed course of action. If the designated area for ‘Khao Gully’ remains unchanged, the students are prepared to stage a protest, making their voices heard through peaceful demonstration. Bhagabati’s commitment to this cause is evident as he shares, “We don’t want any confrontation, but if the GMC doesn’t reconsider, we will have no option.”

It’s noteworthy that the issue also involves allegations of disrespect towards students by those involved in setting up business establishments in the earmarked area. Bhagabati alleged that members of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) had displayed a lack of consideration for hostel boarders and students. Despite such challenges, the student community has exhibited remarkable poise, acting in a manner befitting their institution’s stature.

Cotton University holds a special place in Guwahati’s educational landscape, and its students are unequivocally invested in its well-being. The clash between education and commerce exemplifies the delicate balance institutions often strive to maintain. In their pursuit of a scholarly haven untainted by commercial pursuits, the students of Cotton University present a testament to the significance of preserving academic sanctity while adapting to evolving urban landscapes.

Cotton University, a beacon of knowledge and intellectual growth, stands as a testament to the aspirations of its students. The resolute opposition against the establishment of ‘Khao Gully’ near its premises serves as a reminder of the fervent commitment to safeguard the institution’s educational ethos. As the student community continues to raise its voice against potential disruptions, their determination underscores the critical role universities play in nurturing not only academic excellence but also the values that shape informed and responsible citizens, ensuring a harmonious coexistence of progress and tradition.
