The newly elected PM is the younger brother of Nawaz Sharif who had been in power for not less than three times in the country. The Sharif Government ended the rule of the former cricket captain who had been ousted on a late Saturday night.

Currently, the India neighbour is going through a rough economic patch with a stagnant IMF . The country which has been formerly been ruled by a military government for over three decades had a change in power when Imran Khan was the PM.  Now with Sharif coming in as the new PM, the country has to mend the relations it had with Pakistan’s Army.

Who is Shehbaz Sharif?

Shehbaz Sharif comes from a well to do industrial family of Pakistan. Younger brother to Nawaz Sharif, the elder brother was ousted by the supreme court of the country on the grounds of corruption. Shehbaz has been a part of the government since 1988. He was the Chief Minister of the Province for the following year, after which he had to flee the country to live in exile till 2007. Pervez Musharaf who was then the chief general of the Pakistan Army led a coup to depose the ruling government.

The younger brother, Shehbaz Sharif, returned to the state after his exile and became the leader of Pakistan Muslm League Nawaz Party. He took the place of his elder brother who was then found guilty of corruption. Shehbaz and his son were also later accused on the charges of money laundering in the year 2019.

According to one of the leading news  source, The Times of India,’Shehbaz Sharif enjoys more amicable relations with Pakistan’s Military which traditionally controls foreign and defence policy in the nuclear armed nation of 220 Million people.’

Just ahead of the election of the new Prime Minister, the former cricket captain who had been power was ousted with a no confidence vote. He even staged a walk out of the assembly and resigned on the grounds that he would not sit in the assembly with ‘thieves’.

As per the reports, Imran Khan believed that forgein powers were involved in removing him from power. Fawad Chaudhry who is the former Information Minister said that , “ all Pakistan Tareekh e- Insaf or the PTI lawmakers will resign from the National Assembly and not become part of any government which was being formed under a foreign agenda.”

Imran Khan tweeted that he and his party are resigning . He said, “ A man who has one corruption case of 16 billion rupees and another corruption case of 8 billion rupees against him… for that person to be selected and elected as the new Prime Minister, there cannot be a bigger insult to the country. We are resigning from the National Assembly”.

As Shezbaz has been elected as the new PM of the country, the court has decided to give both him and his son anticipatory bail extension till 27th of April 2022.
