Sushil Chandra relinquished his charge upon completing his tenure as Chief Election Commissioner on Saturday.
Government on Monday appointed the senior most Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar as the new Chief Election Commissioner with effect from Sunday.
As per reports, he is the senior-most commissioner in the three-member poll panel after Sushil Chandra.
According to the Law Ministry, “the president is pleased to appoint Kumar, the senior most Election Commissioner as the Chief Election Commissioner in the Election Commission of India. Kumar will assume the charge of the office of the Chief Election Commissioner of India with effect from May 15th 2022 vice Shri Sushil Chandra consequent upon his demitting Office of the Chief Election Commissioner on May 14th, 2022.
He is from the batch of 1984 IAS. He joined as the Election Commissioner in place of the Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa.
