A possible dowry case has been reported in a recent case. Wherein a resident of Guwahati ,died on her hospital bed after being attacked by her in-laws and her husband. The woman was undergoing her treatment at GMCH. Apparently she took her last breath on Wednesday.
Dowry death case reported
The woman’s family member has alleged that the girl was tortured due to dowry. The mother of the deceased victim has filed a complain to the Latasil Police Station thereby mentioning her reason for her daughter’s death. The mother has strongly alleged her son in law along with his mother to be responsible for her daughter’s death.
According to the reports of the Latasil Police, the report was filed by the victim’s mother and her family on 18th March 2022. The report was lodged for attack , thereafter the deceased victim’s husband was arrested.
The deceased victim’s husband was then moved to jail. Going by the reports forwarded by the Police Department, the incident occurred on the night of 17th March 2022, at around 7 PM. The husband, Pradip Talukdar was drunk and had started to purposely hit his wife, Gitashri Talukdar several time, until unconscious. Following the next morning, he attempted to kill her by making her suffocated with a rope.
The deceased victim suffered major injuries and was rushed to the GMCH because of her worsening condition. She was further admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

The deceased victim, Gitashri Talukdar had married her husband Pradip Talukdar almost four years back. Since the initial years of her marriage, she was said to be constantly tortured both physically, and mentally by her in laws and her husband. The reason of her abuse was mainly related to dowry. As a result of her constant husband and her being at mercy at the hands of her man , Gitashri’s family used to send her monetary gains in the form of money, jewellery and other items.
But despite all odds, the woman had to undergo such torture and thus took her last breath on the hospistal bed of GMCH.
How the system of dowry affects all woman
The traumatic act of Dowry started ages ago in the Indian society. This act not only demeans a woman but also establishes the nature of ‘male supremacy’ into the society. In order to end the long prevailing custom of dowry, the Government has passed several laws. Many of which has severe consequences with the punishment.
Inspite of the strict measures, the system of dowry still prevails in our society which makes it hard to uproot the sytem altogether. Surprisingly, in many societies, even though women are worshipped, the torture done against these very women is frightening.
Every society must ensure that all women are safe not only at their homes but also at their in laws. The mindset of the people to adapt to new changes and acceptance of women empowerment must be brought about.
Many people believe that portrayal of women in submissive characters, and constant aggressive nature of husbands in television serials has affected the mindset of people to such an extent that they keep believing those corrupted thoughts to be true.
These unethical propaganda and these behaviour is quite astonishing to see in the 21 st century India. There are still number of people who believe these stigma and has no intention to change. Ultimately it is the responsibility of the people of the younger generation to be able to make change in the society and bring about peace, harmony and love not only inside the four walls of their homes but also in the society at large.
