On Friday, Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain was gifted with a new car by a French automotive manufacturer. During a visit of a top representative of the company, he gave her the keys to his Renault KIGER, according to a statement released by PTI.

“Hailing from a village in the Golaghat district in Assam, Lovlina not only ‘punched’ her way into the hearts of the entire nation but with her dedication and commitment, she also became an inspiration for other athletes. Her journey finds resonance with a billion Indians who aspire to break out of their humble backgrounds,” it added.

Who is Lovlina Borgohain?

Olympic

The 23-year-old, who was the first woman boxer from Assam to qualify for the Olympics, has now won a bronze medal for India in the event’s Women’s 69kg Welterweight category. Borgohain finished third in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after falling in the semi-finals to world champion Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey on August 4.

Borgohain’s achievement was acknowledged Thursday by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswas who congratulated her, saying, “A matter of great joy and pride for us as @LovlinaBorgohai becomes the first woman pugilist from Assam to qualify for the #Olympics.”

Lovlina’s early life

Borgohain spoke about her early origins and plans in an interview with SheThePeople two years ago.

“I come from a lower-middle-class family that belongs to Assam’s Golaghat. From an early age, my twin sisters and I were taught to be strong to pursue our dreams or to be successful in life. My mother is a very strong woman and despite having a poor economic condition she never let us suffer in any situation. My sisters are well-trained in martial arts and seeing them I also got interested in doing so.” she said.

Borgohain made international headlines in 2018 when she competed in the Commonwealth Games. At the 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi and the 2019 Women’s World Boxing Championships in Russia, she won bronze medals.

Borgohain is a young player who has already established herself in the international arena with legends such as Mary Kom.
