On Tuesday, August 24, former Assam Chief Minister and the new Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the North East of India has turned out as the growth engine of the country.

Sonowal said that Prime Minister Modi always made comparisons between the Northeast and Ashta Laxmi. This is due to its rich natural resources. Further, the former CM added that Modi views the North East as the focus of attention for the country’s development and has been tirelessly working, since assuming charge as Prime Minister in 2014, for the development of the previously untended region.
Love and Commitment towards the North-East
After the conclusion of the three-day Jan Ashirwad Yatra, Sonowal attended a felicitation programme in Dibrugarh on Tuesday. In the programme, Sonowal said that PM Modi rediscovered the massive potentials and possibilities of not just Assam but all North-Eastern states.
Additionally, the Union Minister mentioned that the induction of five Ministers from the North East region in the Union Cabinet shows his love and commitment towards the Northeastern people of the country.
“Narendra Modi is the only Prime Minister who has given the highest importance to the Northeast. Modi not only loves the region but he also respects the Northeast. He wants the northeast to have steady growth.
“This is his commitment, dedication, love and affection to the people of Northeast. We are lucky enough that we have got this huge opportunity to work under his great leadership,” he added.
“Modiji refers to the northeastern states as ‘Ashta Lakshmi’ (eight forms of the goddess of wealth) of India. Induction of five ministers from the region in the union cabinet is evident of the Prime Minister’s commitment and sincerity towards the region,” Sonowal said.
Neglect of the Northeast by the Congress Government
Sonowal also said that the people of the northeast have witnessed loads of change in the various fields like transport and communication, education, agriculture, infrastructure development, and economy.
“After the misrule and neglect of the Northeast by the Congress government during their 60 years rule, the Modi government in just seven years transformed the entire region,” he said.
“Now the region has emerged as the new growth engine of the country. The region will witness more welfare and developmental works in the coming days,” Sonowal said.
