Conrad K Sangma who is the Chief Minister of Meghalaya said that the state government has decided on Thursday to come up with Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021. The main aim of the act is to regulate the gaming and jackpot parlours that operate in the region since the past 25 years.

As per reports from the local media, these parlours are reportedly functioning without any rules and regulation and are also not paying any taxes. The Chief Minister stated, “It is for this reason that this particular gaming act has been brought in so that the gaming parlours come within the ambit of the law and are required to pay taxes.”
He further added, “i am very clear that this is not going to lead to casinos or anything like that coming up anywhere in the state capital or major tourist destinations.”
The state government of Meghalaya feels that this initiative must be taken only in areas where it can be a source of revenue generation and not in areas that will have social impacts.
