Thirdly, there will also be a Sub-Committee for Security & Law & Order headed by the Chief Minister, Sh. Conrad Sangma with Deputy CM & Home Minister as members to look into aspects of law & order, possible future threats & overall functioning of Meghalaya Police.
Extension of Curfew
Lastly, given the overall situation in Shillong, the Curfew will be extended till 5 AM on 18th August 2021 along with the temporary ban on mobile internet services which is also extended for the next 24 hours.
These decisions come in after a former HNLC leader, Cheristerfield Thangkhiew was shot dead in an encounter with the police in the early hours of August 13. Ever since that, there have been several incidents in several parts of the state. Starting from stone-pelting in the Chief Minister’s residence to the observation of August 15 as a ‘Black Flag Day’.
Looking into the sensitivity of the situation, yesterday, a curfew was declared in Shillong. Along with it, internet and SMS services were shut down to prevent the spread of misinformation through pictures, videos and text and have the potential to cause serious breakdown of Law & Order”.
