Legendary Santoor player of India, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma passed away Tuesday morning due to cardiac arrest in his Mumbai residence. He was 84 years old and was suffering from kidney-related problems for the last six months and was on dialysis.

Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma who was a globally known figure, contributed immensely to the field of art and music. He made the classical instrument of Santoor famous because of his internationally recognized playing style.
The legendary santoor player recorded his first album in 1960 and also composed the background music for Shantaram’s film Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje in 1956.
Many prominent leaders of the states expressed their sorrow and condolences on their social media handles. Mamata Banerjee, CM of West Bengal wrote, “Sad to know about the demise of Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, eminent Indian Music Composer. His departure impoverishes our cultural world. My deepest condolences.”
Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi also paid condolences to his family and friends, “our cultural world is poorer with the demise of Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma Ji. He popularised the Santoor at a global level. His music will continue to inspire the coming generations. I fondly remember my interactions with him. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
