Ladakh UT declares Snow leopard state animal & Black-necked crane new state bird

The Ladakh union territory administration has declared the new state animal is the snow leopard and black-necked crane as the state bird, 2 years after the Union Territories split from the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state in 2019.

Issued a notification to this effect

The Principal Secretary of UT’s Forest has issued a notification to this effect by the Ecology and Environment Department on behalf of Lieutenant Governor, R K Mathur.

However, the black-necked crane (Grus nigricollis) and the snow leopard (Panther unica)shall be the state bird and state animal respectively from the date of issue of the notification.

Where is it found?

The black-necked crane, which was also the state bird of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, is particularly found in Ladakh, India. 

The mountainous region of the eastern and western Himalayas for the snow leopard is the habitat of the big cat in India. Hangul was however the state animal of the erstwhile state of J&K which also included Ladakh.

The state animal and bird are selected from the unique flora and fauna in the particular state and UT, and represent the natural wonders of that particular State/UT and its culture. 

Plays a crucial role in improving conservation and protection

Though, these symbols play a crucial role in improving conservation and protection undertakings and shine a spotlight on species that are integral to a state or UT.
