Increased Vigilance Along Assam and Tripura Borders

In response to the recent civil unrest in Bangladesh, the Border Security Force (BSF) and police departments of Assam and Tripura have ramped up security along the Indo-Bangladesh international border. Assam shares a 265.5-kilometre border with Bangladesh, of which 120.6 kilometres fall within the Barak Valley region, including Karimganj and Cachar. Tripura, on the other hand, shares an extensive 856-kilometre border with Bangladesh.

Unfenced and Riverine Border Areas Under Scrutiny

According to BSF officials, approximately 4.5 kilometres of the international border in Assam remain unfenced, with significant portions constituting riverine areas. In light of the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, security measures that had already been enhanced have now been further tightened to prevent any potential spillover of violence into India.

Reinforced Security and Patrolling

“Tripura has already tightened security since the turmoil in Bangladesh. Today, patrolling and security in the bordering areas have been tightened,” stated a senior state police official. The Inspector General of BSF’s Mizoram and Cachar Frontier, SK Misra, recently assessed the unfenced gaps along the Kushiyara River and other areas of Assam, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a robust 24/7 vigilance along the border.

Coordination Between BSF and Local Police

The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Assam Police’s southern range, Kangkanjyoti Saikia, confirmed that adequate support is being provided to the BSF by local security forces. “The BSF is taking several measures, and we are supporting them from our side. As of now, no additional forces have been called because the BSF and Assam police have the strength to control the present situation,” he stated.

Community Involvement and Assurance

There are at least nine Indian villages located outside the fencing in Assam. Security officials are in constant communication with the residents of these villages, who have pledged their support. Measures are in place to protect these villagers should any threats arise from across the border.

Political Assurance on Border Protection

Meanwhile, TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma has assured Union Home Minister Amit Shah that the borders in Tripura are well protected and that no illegal influx from Bangladesh will be permitted. This assurance comes as part of broader efforts to ensure the integrity and security of India’s northeastern borders amid the current regional instability.

Strengthened Border Security in Northeast India Amidst Bangladesh Turmoil
As tensions continue to rise in Bangladesh, India’s border security apparatus remains on high alert, ensuring that the peace and stability of border regions in Assam and Tripura are maintained.
