On November 25, India was elected to the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for a four-year term.
India’s Victory to re-election
This had come after a week, India was re-elected to the UNESCO Executive Board.
The country won the re-election to the executive board of UNESCO for the term of years 2021 to 2025, on November 17.

Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakashi Lekhi said in a tweet on Thursday, “Happy to announce that India has won the seat on the World Heritage Committee from the Asia Pacific region. I thank all our supporters for leading us to this historic win”.
Further, India to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) tweeted, “India gets elected to the World Heritage Committee with 142 votes for a four year term 21-25!”
The World Heritage Committee
The World Heritage Committee has been deemed responsible for the definition of the use of the World Heritage Fund and additionally has the duty of allocation of financial assistance upon requests from State parties.
It has the final say on whether a property is to be inscribed on the World Heritage List.
The Committee meets annually, or once a year. It consists of representatives from 21 of the State Parties to the Convention elected by the General Assembly.
The preceeded previous week, India won re-election to the Executive Board of the UN cultural organisation for the 2021-25 term with 164 votes.
The UN agency consists of three constitutional organs, namely, the General Conference, the Secretariat, and the UNESCO Executive Board. The latter is elected by the General Conference.
Thus, the Executive Board acts under the authority of the General Conference. It facilitates the thorough programming of activity and work for the organisation. The Board also corresponds budget estimates, which are submitted to it, by the Director-General.
According to the official UNESCO website, it is an amalgamation of 58 member states each with a four-year term of office.
