In a significant breakthrough, the Guwahati Police have apprehended a gang of five criminals involved in a string of crimes, including kidnapping and daylight robbery across the city. The arrests follow swift action by authorities to address reported incidents of kidnapping and robbery near the Jalukbari rotary area in Guwahati.
Guwahati Police Bust Gang Involved in Kidnapping and Robbery Spree
According to reports, criminals lured unsuspecting passengers waiting for public transport near Jalukbari rotary by offering lifts in private vehicles. Subsequently, they would rob the passengers of valuable items either by rendering them unconscious with sedatives or through threats and force.
Cases under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) were registered and investigated by the Jalukbari Police Station, including Jalukbari PS Case No. 686/23, 734/23, and 25/24.
The arrest of the gang represents a positive step towards ensuring the safety and security of the public in the area. The individuals apprehended have been identified as Majnur Ali, Rahim Ali, Amir Hamza, Tafazul Ali, and Lutfur Rahman.
The modus operandi of the criminals involved targeting passengers waiting for public buses or travelers on the Jalukbari flyover. They offered lifts to victims, claiming to be heading towards the same destination. Once the victims were in their grasp, they were administered tea laced with anti-depressants or sleeping pills. Upon losing consciousness, the victims’ valuables were stolen, including sensitive information like ATM PINs and Google Pay details. Victims were then discarded by the roadside after the robbery.
Tragically, in one instance (Ref. Jalukbari PS Case No. 686/23), a victim named Late Asmot Ali lost his life after being dropped on the NH in the Baihata Chariali area and subsequently hit by an unknown vehicle.
The cracking of these cases was facilitated by technical analysis, including CCTV footage examination, phone number-based analysis, and scrutiny of digital payments. The interrogation of one suspect led to the identification and apprehension of all accused involved in the crimes. Additionally, vehicles used in the commission of the crimes have been recovered and seized based on information obtained from the arrested individuals.
