Expert to discuss Corbevax use for Children aged 5 to 12 today

The Subject Expert Committee of the drug regulator DCGI will meet on Thursday to discuss the use of Biological E’s Corbevax for children aged five to 12. As Covid-19 instances continue to rise this month and reports of cluster breakouts in schools in Delhi-NCR.

According to government sources, the SEC meeting will begin at midday and will likely focus on suggestions for the limited emergency use of Corbevax in children aged 5 to 12. The vaccination is now being given to children between the ages of 12 and 14.

Covid-19 immunizations for minors began on January 3 in India, with individuals aged 15 to 18 being the first to receive the vaccine. On March 16, the drive was expanded to include youngsters aged 12 and up. India is currently administering two Covid vaccines to children above 12.

Children between the ages of 15 and 18 are currently receiving Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin at private and government vaccination centres, while children between the ages of 12 and 14 are receiving Biological E’s Corbevax solely at government centres.

Biological E’s Corbevax

Corbevax, an Indian-developed Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) protein subunit vaccine against Covid, is based on the same technology as Hepatitis-B vaccinations. The vaccination is given via intramuscular injection and is given in two doses separated by 28 days.

After Covid-19 infections spiked in the national capital region in recent days, several governments, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, made masks mandatory in cities and towns once again.

Delhi was responsible for more than a third of India’s 2,067 new infections recorded on Wednesday, bringing the country’s total to more than 43 million. The number of deaths in the United States increased by 40, largely in Kerala, bringing the total to 522,006. India reported 2,380 new coronavirus infections on Thursday, bringing the total number of current cases to 13,433. With 56 more deaths, the death toll has risen to 5,22,062.

After most measures, including penalties for not wearing masks, were lifted a few weeks ago, the number of daily infections has been hovering around a month high in recent days. India was reporting a record number of illnesses and deaths around this time last year.
