The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards Ceremony was held on Sunday night at LA Live in Downtown Los Angeles, California. Stars from across the TV industry vied to take home the coveted award. Cedric the Entertainer was the host of the show, which was broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+.
Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” was with most nominations
Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” was with the most nominations with 13 and took home total four awards. ‘Ted Lasso’ along with HBO’s ‘Mare of Easttown’ won the first awards at the 73rd Primetime Emmys. Each of them won supporting acting prizes for a comedy and limited series. Debbie Allen received the 2021 Governor’s Award Netflix’s “The Crown” received 11 nominations and received the biggest haul with seven awards.
The outstanding lead actor in a comedy award was picked by Jason Sudeikis for his turn as the titular sensitive soccer coach in ‘Ted Lasso’, while Jean Smart won award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role on HBO’s “Hacks.” And Kate Winslet won lead actress in a limited series or movie for her role in ‘Mare of Easttown’ as a detective sergeant.
Netflix won highest awards
Netflix won more Emmys for the first time ever than any other network or platforms. Netflix won a total of 44 awards, courtesy of ‘The Crown’ and ‘Gambit’. The Crown’ received seven honours, picking up the drama series trophy, as well as prizes for lead actress (Olivia Colman), lead actor (Josh O’Connor),supporting actor (Tobias Menzies), supporting actress (Gillian Anderson), directing (Jessica Hobbs) and outstanding writing (Peter Morgan)
Several major comedy prizes were won by ‘Hacks’. The writing and directing for comedy trophies were received by the HBO Max show along with Jean Smart winning for her role as stand-up comic Deborah Vance in the show. It’s her fourth Emmy of her career. In total, HBO and HBO Max won 19 prizes.
COVID-19 protocols followed
The Primetime Emmy Awards 2021 ceremony took place with a limited live audience including the nominees and select guests. All attendees were asked to show vaccination proof and a negative COVID test, taken 48 hours before the ceremony.
The event was also moved outdoors to L.A. Live’s Event Deck at the Microsoft Theater and the media centre was replaced by a virtual counterpart.
