On the anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi‘s death, the Congress paid tribute to her, with former party chief Rahul Gandhi calling her a magnificent example of women’s power.

Indira Gandhi, the then-Prime Minister, was murdered by two of her own security guards on October 31, 1984.
Rahul Gandhi sends out tweet lauding Indira Gandhi
“My grandmother served the country fearlessly till the last moment — her life is a source of inspiration for us,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted in Hindi from his Twitter account.
“A great example of women power, humble tributes to Mrs. Indira Gandhi on her martyrdom day,” he said.
Congress praised the former Prime Minister’s contributions on social media
In a message from its official Twitter account, the Congress praised the former Prime Minister’s contributions to the country.
“She represented strength. She epitomised sacrifice. She personified service. A billion salutes to the Iron Lady of India, our very first woman Prime Minister, a true Bharat Ratna, Smt. Indira Gandhi, on her death anniversary,” the Congress said in the tweet that they sent out.

She was India’s third prime minister and the country’s first and only female prime minister to date. Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, had a daughter named Gandhi.
She was Prime Minister of India twice, from January 1966 to March 1977 and again from January 1980 to October 1984, giving her the second longest-serving Indian Prime Minister behind her father.
