An attempted robbery took place in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Sunday which went wrong after three robbers were shot dead by the police. The robbery took place in Allahabad Bank, Bhotgaon Village branch-six km from Kokrajhar town.
Three robbers had barged into the bank with tools and gears for the robbery. The situation got out of hand when they fired upon the Police at Chengmari near Bhotgaon at 2.30 am on August 22.
The firing
The police statement stated that they were 800 meters away from their target and the gunfight started when they were fired upon by the robbers. They launched a combing operation and found 3 robbers severely injured and two-three managed to escape.
“Combing operations were on till late night to flush out the rest of the dacoits,” says Assam DGP Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta. The three injured robbers were taken to the hospital but were declared dead on arrival.

Things recovered
25-liter oxygen and a 14.5-liter gas cylinder (to break into the bank’s safe), an iron rod, and two 7.65mm handguns with eight bullets and six empty cases. Mobile phones were discovered from their bodies which gave identification of the robbers as Siraj Daula Sheikh of Mancachar district, and Monuar Hussain and Aminul Hoque of Goalpara district.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma praised Police for their work, “A robbery gang was neutralised by Assam Police in Kokrajhar. This prevented a big bank robbery.”
Further investigation is underway.
