5.3 magnitude earthquake hits Afghanistan; 26 killed

An earthquake of 5.3 magnitude hit the area of western Afghanistan and reportedly 26 people have died due to it. 

The earthquake mainly hit in the Qadis district located in the western province of Badghis, Afghanistan. 

26 people have been reported dead as the roof of their houses suddenly collapsed.

United States Geological Survey informed earthquake magnitude 

The United States Geological Survey informed the earthquake magnitude to be 5.3. Also there was a second shake with 4.9 magnitude experienced after 2hrs. 

As per reports from the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre the earthquake occurred at the depth of 30 kilometers i.e. 18.64 miles. 

More than 700 residences damaged in earthquake

Mullah Janan Saeqe, the head of the Emergency Operations Centre of the Ministry of State For Emergency Affairs, informed that more than 700 residences got damaged during the earthquake. 

And also gave confirmation about the death toll. Among all the 26 deaths, four were reported as children and five were women. Also four people were severely injured. 

District governor Mohammad Saleh Purdel and a spokesperson Baz Mohammad Sarwary, informed about the damages caused and the reason behind the deaths. 

Considering that Badghis is one of the most underdeveloped areas in Afghanistan and it is also located in the mountainous region the number of deaths and injured people might increase. 

Also Sarwary said that the first rescuers have reached a few of the affected places under heavy rainfall.
