11 members of a tribal council in Meghalaya’s North Garo Hills area have joined the Trinamool Congress, making Mamata Banerjee‘s party the biggest opposition in the local body.
11 tribal council members from Congress
After all 11 members of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council switched sides, the Congress now has no representation on the 30-member council. In the council, the NPP has 17 seats while the BJP has two.
The Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo tribes each have their own autonomous council in the northeastern state.
“In Resubelpara, North Garo Hills, 11 MDCs have joined our family, making today a very special day for us. We extend a warm welcome to everyone! “On Twitter, the TMC state unit wrote.
Warm welcome by Mukul Sangma
Mukul Sangma, the former chief minister of Meghalaya who recently joined the TMC, greeted them warmly.
“Under the leadership of @MamataOfficial, we will work tirelessly to guarantee that our state continues to rise,” the TMC stated.
The MDCs’ defection occurred just two weeks after 12 of the 17 Congress MLAs in the Meghalaya Assembly defected to the Trinamool Congress, striking a body blow to the northeastern state’s grand old party.
