Certain types of fishing meshes of different measurements like 7 cm/ 14 cm has been barred from use during the breeding season of fishes from 1st April to 15th July.

The use of certain types of meshes of measurements like 7cm/14cm has been prohibited for use during the breeding season. The usage of net such as Berjal, Fasijal, mahajal are few of them that are prohibited.
As per the reports from the official of the Fishery Department, a notice has been issued in regard to the usage so that fishes are avilable all throughout the year. The report said, ” fishing in any type of waterbody except in private waterbodies, using the aforesaid nets is banned during ṭhe period. We have already alerted all the districts regarding the prohibition.”

The department has also initiated some awareness programmes in order to curb the over catching of fishes. the official from the department named, “Ratul Sarma furher added that, “, Banners and hoardings have been put in. Leaflets are being distributed among people. Awareness meetings are being conducted in the villages so that the people do not go fishing during this period.”
That apart, some fishes who carry eggs and are of a certain brred like rohu, catla, pithia, ghoria to name a few has been strictly advised not to catch and kill these.

Under these circumstances, the fishermen who are depended on these fishes for their survival are being given an amount of Rs 1500 per month as a kind of relief money.
