The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) marked a significant milestone with its Tenth Convocation held on August 27, 2024, at its 9th Mile, Ri Bhoi campus. The event was graced by Vice Chancellors, academicians, and other prominent figures, celebrating academic excellence and cultural contributions.
Degrees Conferred to Over 1,600 Graduates
In a proud moment for the institution, USTM awarded degrees to 1,639 graduates during the convocation. Among them were 17 Ph.D. recipients, 906 Post Graduate graduates, and 716 Undergraduate students. This convocation highlighted the university’s commitment to fostering educational growth and excellence across various disciplines.
Cultural Icons Zubeen Garg and Lou Majaw Honored
A highlight of the ceremony was the conferring of Honorary Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) degrees to renowned cultural figures Zubeen Garg and Lou Majaw. Both were recognized for their extraordinary contributions to art, culture, and societal development. Their presence and acceptance remarks added a unique cultural dimension to the academic event.
Inspiring Addresses by Academic Luminaries
The convocation was presided over by Shri Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of USTM, and featured a Convocation Address by Prof. Ved Prakash, Former Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Additionally, Prof. V. N. Rajsekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor of Somaiya Vidyasagar University, Mumbai, and Former UGC Chairman, delivered a Special Address, inspiring the graduates and dignitaries alike.
Chancellor’s Vision for USTM’s Future
Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque shared his ambitious vision for USTM, aspiring for it to become a world-class institution. He expressed his gratitude to the Government of Meghalaya for its unwavering support in achieving this goal. The convocation also featured the presentation of the University report by USTM Vice Chancellor Prof. G. D. Sharma, highlighting the institution’s achievements and future plans.
The ceremony honored the outstanding achievements of its students with several awards. Kasim Ampang Sangma received the Visitor’s Best Student Award, while Manash Pratim Sarmah was honored with the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Best PG Student Award. Mustafizur Rahman earned the Chancellor’s Best Student Award, and Sujata Kumari was awarded the PA Sangma Best UG Student Award. Additionally, 23 gold medals were awarded to top Post Graduates, and 22 were presented to exceptional Undergraduates, recognizing their academic excellence.
Convocation Concludes with a Patriotic Finale
The convocation ceremony concluded on a patriotic note with the administration of oaths and the singing of the National Anthem. This event not only celebrated the achievements of the graduates but also set the stage for their future endeavors, marking a new chapter in the history of USTM.
