Unidentified disease grips Assam’s Cachar Pigs

An “unidentified” disease has killed a large number of pigs in Barak Valley’s Cachar district in the past few weeks, sources said.

Local residents have found over a hundred pigs in Tikargram, Arunachal which lies on the outskirts of Silchar town.

The cacrcasses have been found in several locations, including the Krishi Vigyan Kendras’s backyard and the railway tracks, among other areas.

What do the locals have to say?

Rajnagar Gaon panchayat member Gopal Paul on Friday said that a large number of pig carcasses have been found in Arunachal. This is emitting an intolerable odour but no step has been taken by the district administration to clear them.

Dr. M Sarkar of the Silchar Veterinary Hospital on Saturday said pigs often suffer from swine flu but the reason behind the deaths in Arunachal is not known yet. 

The veterinary department has stated that a probe into the deaths of pigs have begun.
