This year’s theme, “20 Years of Giving: Thank You Blood Donors,” served as the focal point for a series of events designed to honor and recognize the vital contributions of voluntary blood donors, who play an essential role in maintaining a safe and sustainable blood supply for the masses.

Pre-Event Awareness Drives

In the lead-up to the event, blood donation awareness drives were organized around the vicinity of Tezpur Medical College and Hospital. These drives aimed to educate and motivate the general public about the importance of regular blood donation. Volunteers and staff engaged with community members, distributing informational materials and answering questions to dispel myths and encourage participation in this life-saving activity.

Event Day Activities

On the day of the celebration, a Free Blood Grouping and Blood Donation Awareness Kiosk was set up. The kiosk provided essential information about blood donation, including the numerous health benefits for donors and recipients. Attendees were offered free blood grouping services, which proved to be a popular attraction, drawing many curious and interested individuals.

In-House Voluntary Blood Donation Camp

One of the key highlights of the day was an in-house voluntary blood donation camp held at the Blood Centre of TMCH. This camp saw enthusiastic participation from doctors, students, and staff of TMCH, all united in their commitment to this noble cause. The collective effort underscored the importance of a robust and readily available blood supply, especially during emergencies.

Felicitation Program

The celebration culminated in a grand felicitation program aimed at honoring the numerous organizations involved in voluntary blood donation camps. The event was graced by several senior officials from the Indian Army, including representatives from the 180 Military Hospital Missamari, 155 Base Hospital Tezpur, SSB Sergaon, 55 BN ITBP Rangamati, 54 BN Bhalukpung, 23 SSB Lalpool, and RTC SSB Salonibari. Additionally, dignitaries from the Indian Air Force (Air Force Station Tezpur) and various other organizations like the Indian Red Cross Society, LIC Dhekiajuli, Warriors NGO, NF Railways Mazdoor Union, and RD Motors Tezpur were also in attendance.

Keynote Address and Awards

Dr. Karuna Hazarika, Principal of Tezpur Medical College and Hospital, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the critical importance of regular and voluntary blood donation. She emphasized the pivotal role played by the Blood Centre during emergencies, reinforcing the message that a well-stocked blood bank is a community’s lifeline during crises.

To recognize exceptional contributions, Certificates of Merit were awarded. The 180 Military Hospital Missamari received the award for the organization with the largest number of blood donors in a single blood camp. The 155 Base Hospital Tezpur was honored for conducting the most disciplined and well-organized blood donation camp. These awards served not only as a token of appreciation but also as an inspiration for other organizations to enhance their participation in voluntary blood donation initiatives.

Closing Remarks

The World Blood Donor Day celebrations at TMCH were a testament to the power of community and collective effort. Through the awareness drives, donation camps, and the felicitation program, the event successfully underscored the message of gratitude and the necessity of regular blood donations. As Dr. Hazarika aptly put it, “Blood donation is not just a service; it is a gift of life. Regular and voluntary donations ensure that we are always prepared to meet the needs of those in emergencies, reaffirming our commitment to saving lives.”

The event concluded with a renewed pledge from all attendees to continue supporting blood donation initiatives and to spread awareness about the importance of this noble cause. The spirit of World Blood Donor Day 2024 at TMCH was a vivid reminder of the profound impact that regular blood donations can have on saving lives and fostering a culture of care and generosity.
