A shocking video of an Indian consular official in New York went viral on the internet on December 1st. According to the footage released by talk show host Simi Garewal, the officer refuses to issue a visa to a woman who applied with all of the required papers.

Although it’s unknown why the heated debate erupted, a portion of it has since gone viral on social media sites, prompting netizens to react.

The video begins with a woman attempting to question the officer why she was denied a visa despite having submitted all of the required documentation and money. The officer was observed handing the woman her papers back.

He also adds unequivocally that he will not provide her a visa. The woman and her companion attempted to reason with the officer throughout the video, but he looked away and exited the room. Finally, a security guard arrived and requested that the woman stop photographing the episode for her own safety.

The woman had lately lost her father and was applying for an Indian visa.

Simi Garewal’s Tweet on the shocking video

“On 24/11/2021. Indian embassy New York. Her father had died & she wanted a visa for India. This is the obnoxious behavior of an Indian officer in the New York Consulate towards her. @DrSJaishankar @MEAIndia @PMOIndia, you can’t ignore this.,” Simi Garewal said in the caption of her Twitter post.

With over 62,000 views and a number of comments, the video has gone viral. While some agreed with Simi Garewal‘s view and asked the External Affairs Ministry to investigate, others pointed out that they had experienced similar treatment at the Indian embassy in New York.

The official Twitter account of the Consulate General of India in New York has issued a statement regarding the incident, stating that the Consulate General will personally review the occurrence.
