Horrifying! Odisha teen sells wife to Rajasthan man after a month of marriage; gets a smartphone from the money

The Odisha police caught a teen who is 17 years old on charges of selling his wife a month after their wedding to a 55-year-old man in Rajasthan where he had gone to work in a brick kiln.

Woman faced resistance from villagers

The 26-year-old woman was rescued by the police from the south-eastern Rajasthan district of Baran which borders Madhya Pradesh, claiming that with “great difficulty” as local villagers prohibited the police team from taking her away, emphasising that they had paid for her, yet the 55-year-old had paid ₹1.8 lakh for her.

According to reports, the teenager, identified as Rajesh Rana of Sulekela village, had married the 26-year-old in the month of July from a nearby village following their love affair for a few months. 

Thereafter after 15 days of marriage, Rajesh took his wife to Rajasthan for a short trip where he sold his wife. 

Bulu Munda, inspector in charge of Belpada police station in Balangir district said, “In August, the couple went to Rajasthan via Raipur and Jhansi to work in a brick kiln. However, a few days after his new job, the 17-year-old sold off his wife to a 55-year-old man from Baran district for ₹1.8 lakh.”

The teen bought himself a smartphone

The teenager splurged the money on eating out and bought himself a smartphone. 

After returning to his village when his wife’s family asked him about her, he said that she abandoned him.

The woman’s family didn’t accept his story and lodged a police complaint with the police. 

Moreover, they checked his call records and detected gaps in his story.

Police’s statement

“We interrogated him and found out that he sold his wife. A team from Balangir went to Rajasthan to trace the woman. However, the locals there did not allow our team to take her back insisting that the woman had been bought for ₹1.8 lakh. We could get her back home with great difficulty,” said the police officer.

The police took action against it, on Friday, the 17-year-old was produced before a juvenile court and sent to a correctional home.
