In a powerful display of solidarity and outrage, healthcare workers, doctors, nurses, and medical staff from District Hospital Hatsingimari in Assam’s South Salmara Mankachar district took to the streets on Saturday, holding a candlelight march to honor the memory of the trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. This tragic incident has sparked nationwide protests, calling for justice and heightened protection for medical professionals across India.
Healthcare Workers Demand Justice and Legal Protection
Led by Dr. Minhaz Choudhary, Joint Director of Health, and Dr. C.R. Roy, State Observer and Joint Director of Health (UIP), the demonstrators voiced their anger and grief, advocating for the implementation of a central law dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of healthcare workers. The medical community, often exposed to threats and violence in their line of duty, is now urgently calling for stronger legal safeguards.
Unified Call for Capital Punishment
The protesters are demanding nothing less than capital punishment for the perpetrators of the heinous crime that shocked the nation. Their participation highlighted the gravity of the issue, emphasizing that justice must be swift and severe to deter future acts of violence against those in the medical profession.
District Immunization Officer Dr. Shirazul Islam, Superintendent of District Hospital Dr. Samsul Haque, District Program Manager Ruful Amin, District Media Expert Mir Ashif Shamim, District Community Mobilizer Sofiqul Islam, and District Accounts Manager Dipankar Biswas were among those present at the march. Their involvement underscores the critical need for action to protect healthcare workers who risk their lives to save others.
A Symbol of Hope and Change
The candlelight march, which proceeded through the District Hospital campus, was a solemn yet powerful demonstration. Participants held candles and placards, symbolizing not only their condemnation of the tragic incident but also their hope for meaningful change. The healthcare community is united in its call for a robust central law that will provide the necessary protection for medical personnel, ensuring they can perform their duties without fear of violence or retribution.
The Urgent Need for a Central Law
As the call for justice reverberates across the nation, the demand for a central law to safeguard healthcare workers has never been more urgent. The enactment of such a law is seen as critical to preventing future tragedies and ensuring that those who dedicate their lives to caring for others are not left vulnerable to violence. The time for action is now, and the medical community, along with the public, is demanding that their voices be heard.
