Karbi Anglong: In yet another breakthrough, the Assam Police on December 11, seized as much as 8 kilogrammes of smuggled gold along NH 36 near Dillai tiniali.

Sources says that the consignment was discovered while it was getting smuggled from Manipur to Guwahati through a Hyundai Venue vehicle with the registration number AS 01EV 2350.
The Dillai police stopped the SUV for a normal check and after validating the documents, a home guard named Maising Tokbi who was inspecting the car grew doubtful about the behavior of the driver.
Two people who are identified as Prakash Basnet aged 32 and Subhash Bista aged 24 are arrested by the police in connection with the recovery. Both of them are said to be residents from Manipur.
However, once the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), said the recent rise in smuggling in the northeast can be attributed to economic distress caused by COVID-19 pandemic.
It is also known that the smugglers offered bribe to Tokbi, which was rejected by him and the matter was instantly reported to the higher authorities.
