India: Citing the rise in rate of the new Omicron variant in the nation, PM Modi on December 23 calls for a high level meeting to have a talk in regards to the situation.
Cases detected so far in India:
According to health ministry data, as many as 213 cases infected with Omicron variant of SARS-CoV2 were detected through genome sequencing of samples till morning of December 22.
Delhi recorded a maximum of 57 cases, followed closely by Maharashtra at 54. Telangana (24), Karnataka (19), Rajasthan (18),
Kerala (15) and Gujarat (14) have also recorded a large number of samples infected with Omicron. Overall, 15 states have reported Omicron cases.
The health ministry has warned states and Union Territories about the rise in Omicron cases, and as per the researchers it is at least three times more transmissible than the Delta variant. In a letter to states and Union Territories, the Centre has asked local authorities to bring back restrictions including night curfews, strict restrictions on large gatherings, curtail numbers in marriages and funerals, restrict numbers in offices and public transport.
