Hyderabad became the first Indian host city to host the Formula E world championship on Monday, and the inaugural race of electric vehicles is likely to take place between November this year and March 2023.
The Telangana government, Formula E Association, and Greenko, the event’s organizer, signed a letter of intent to make Hyderabad a prospective host city for an annual Formula E race.
Signing the tripartite letter of intent
In the presence of Telangana’s Industry Minister K. T. Rama Rao, FIA Formula E Chief Championship Officer Alberto Longo, Greenko Group Chief Executive Officer Anil Chalamasetty, Mahindra Racing CEO and Team Principal Dilbagh Gill, and other officials, the tripartite letter of intent was signed in Hyderabad.
Hyderabad in the list of elite cities
Hyderabad will join the likes of Rome, Paris, London, Hong Kong, New York, and Berlin in the elite club of cities. Every year, the Federation Internationale de Automobile organizes a race in eighteen cities throughout the world.
Alberto was impressed by the Telangana government’s quick action in signing the letter of intent in less than a month after the idea was floated. He claimed he had never witnessed a government making decisions that quickly.
He stated that Hyderabad would be the official host city in the near future, with the inaugural race taking place between December 2022 and March 2023.
Electric vehicle hub of future
Rama Rao believes that hosting Formula E is an important step in establishing Hyderabad as an electric vehicle hub. “This isn’t just a race. “It’s the ideal blend of future technology, sustainability, and, most importantly, an entrepreneurial mentality,” he said.
He believed that the event would give the city’s image and infrastructure a boost. The state government intends to conduct an EV summit in conjunction with the Formula E championship to raise awareness of electric vehicles and foster innovation.
The EV Summit will bring together leading EV players and charging infrastructure firms from across the world.
Indian team’s opportunity to race on home ground
Gill, who leads the only Indian Formula E team, stated that they will soon have the opportunity to compete in front of their home audience. Formula E, he claims, is significant since the technological transfer from race vehicle to roll car takes only 18 months.
