Assam Hit by Severe Storms and Heavy Rain, Resulting in Tragic Death and Injuries

Assam has been battered by severe storms and heavy rain, resulting in the tragic death of one student and injuries to twelve others. The relentless weather has caused widespread disruption across the state, including power outages and water-logging, leaving residents struggling to cope with the aftermath.

The fatal incident occurred in Dighalbori, Morigaon district, where a student lost his life after a tree fell on the auto-rickshaw in which he was traveling. In a separate heartbreaking event, twelve children sustained injuries when a tree collapsed onto their school bus in Sonitpur district. These incidents highlight the perilous conditions brought on by the extreme weather.

Strong winds uprooted trees in several locations, including the state capital, Guwahati. The power supply was severely disrupted in lower Assam as numerous electric poles were knocked down. Additionally, various towns reported significant water-logging, exacerbating the challenges faced by residents.

The adverse weather conditions led to the closure of schools in the affected districts as a precautionary measure. Ferry services were also halted in multiple districts, including Guwahati, Jorhat, Tezpur, Morigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, South Salmara, Barpeta, Cachar, and Karimganj. This widespread disruption underscores the severity of the situation.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has issued advisories urging people to avoid vulnerable structures and water-logged areas. They have recommended stocking up on essential items and maintaining contact with authorities in case of emergencies. The ASDMA’s proactive approach aims to mitigate the risks posed by the ongoing severe weather.

Relief and rescue operations are being carried out by teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), alongside police and forest department officials. Their efforts are focused on providing immediate assistance to those affected and ensuring the safety of residents in the storm-hit areas.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called on citizens to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. In a statement posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), he emphasized the importance of caution during these dangerous conditions. “Heavy storms are lashing parts of the state and are expected to continue. I’ve instructed officials to be alert and respond to emergencies at the earliest,” Sarma stated.

The ongoing severe weather in Assam follows the landfall of Cyclone Remal in neighboring West Bengal on Sunday. The cyclone’s impact has been felt across multiple regions, prompting high alert status in several districts of Assam. Forecasts indicate the potential for continued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, further complicating the situation.

The ASDMA continues to monitor the evolving weather conditions and coordinate with various agencies to provide necessary support and resources. Their efforts are critical in ensuring that the affected communities receive timely assistance and that further casualties are prevented.

Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and heed the advice of local authorities. The priority remains the safety and well-being of all individuals during this challenging time.

In conclusion, Assam is grappling with the devastating effects of severe storms and heavy rain, resulting in a tragic death and multiple injuries. The widespread disruption underscores the importance of preparedness and vigilance in the face of extreme weather. As rescue and relief operations continue, the collective efforts of authorities and residents are crucial in navigating this crisis.
