First Omicron Case of Northeast detected in Manipur

On December 27, the first case of Omicron variant of coronavirus in the Northeast was detected in Manipur.

About the patient:

The patient is a 48-year-old, who is a resident of Imphal West district. According to an official, the victim returned from Tanzania via Delhi and hereafter he tested positive for COVID-19 on the eighth day of his return to India.

While speaking to the NDTV, the Manipur Health Department stated that after the patient’s return to the state his sample was collected on December 21 and sent for genome sequencing at the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) in Imphal.

The report says that his sample was found to be infected with the Omicron strain on December 27. 

Current status:

Dr K Rajo Singh, Directorate of Health Services said, that the patient is currently undergoing treatment at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal and his condition is stable.

Family members :

The Government officials said that three of the members have also tested positive for coronavirus. However, their samples are not yet confirmed for the Omicron variant.
