On Friday night, a drunk young girl hits PWD labourers at Guwahati’s Rukminigaon. The intoxicated girl smashed her car on them.
However, 9 laborers were injured in this accident. The injured are undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). According to a report, the condition of 2 labourers is critical.
Currently, the young girl is under the custody of the Dispur Police.

Drunk driving cases in the state
A data by the Assam State Transport department reveals that in Assam drunken driving is the prime cause of road accidents and casualties across the state. Whereas, the second reason is the use of mobile phones by the driver while driving.
Altogether 1,245 people died in 2,948 road accident incidents, till April 2021, according to reports.
In 2018, of the 7,993 road accidents, as many as 8.1 % of cases were due to the first reason; whereas 2.4 % of the incidents were due to the second cause. Altogether 2,866 people died due to road accidents that year.
A total of 3,207 people died in 8,250 road accidents in 2019 across the State. As much as 3.4 % of these cases were due to the first reason while 0.7% was because of the second major cause.
In 2020, 2,629 road casualties were reported against 6,593 accident cases. Of them, 4.9 % occurred because of people driving in an intoxicated state; and 2.4% of accident cases took place when the drivers were talking on mobile phones while driving.
Severe driving offenses
Though, such incidents cause nearly one-third of all traffic accidents and are considered to be among the most severe of driving offenses.
