Black Box of IAF Helicopter that crashed with CDS Bipin Rawat on board recovered; further investigation underway

The black box recovered of the Indian Air Force (IAF) Helicopter that crashed with Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat and 13 others on board and has been taken away for further investigation.

How the Black Box was recovered?

According to India Today, the officials said the black box was retrieved by the authorities expanding the search area from 300 metres to one km from the spot where the Helicopter crashed. The black box would provide crucial data on the chain of events leading to the unfortunate accident.

About the unfortunate accident

Thirteen of the 14 passengers on board the Mi-17V5 chopper that crashed near Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor, including Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Bipin Rawat and his wife Madhulika Rawat lost their lives.

Group Captain Varun Singh is the sole survivor of the crash and is on life support, currently undergoing treatment at the Military Hospital in Wellington.

The Indian Air Force (IAF), in a tweet on Wednesday, December 8 confirmed that CDS Gen Rawat and his wife Madhulika Rawat are among those confirmed dead.
