Assam: BDF Chief Pradip Dutta Roy arrested for opposing and removing ‘Assamese Hoardings’ in Silchar

Cachar Police has arrested the Chief Convenor of the Barak Democratic Front (BDF), Pradip Dutta Roy, based on an FIR registered by the Hindu Yuva Parishad.

About the arrest

On the evening of November 27, the police have arrested the Convenor of the BDF, Pradip Dutta Roy. Initially, Dutta Roy was called in for interrogation that went on for long hours.

He has reportedly been held and arrested based on a First Information Report lodged by the Hindu Yuva Parishad at the Silchar Sadar Police Station.

The Superintendent of Cachar Police, namely, Ramandeep Kaur has said that Dutta Roy has been booked under the sections 153A, 295, 295A, 120B, 124, 505, and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.

Recent incidents

Dutta Roy had allegedly issued a strict warning and ultimatum for the removal of a hoarding written in the Assamese language, in the Goswami Filling Station Petrol Pump, in Silchar.

Subsequently, the hoarding was replaced by a Bengali one. Additionally, Dutta Roy had also stated that Assamese language posters are a violation of the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Act,1961.
